| The Music Center is a national leader in arts education. We believe the arts enrich the lives of all people and are crucial to the development of every child.
Why the Arts Matter
The Music Center believes the purpose of schooling is to transmit the key understandings of the human experience to the next generation and to prepare them with the skills and knowledge they will need to contribute to society. Quality arts education does both. It connects students to the key concepts, ideas and meaning communicated through art, music, dance, and theatre. Arts programs foster creativity and innovation that helps prepare young people to shape the future.
Arts education is both a subject matter for study and a catalyst for broader school improvement. We embrace one the of guiding principles of the Music in Education National Consortium: “We believe that a comprehensive arts program assumes its full power in education through the dynamic tension between the arts as distinct authentic subject areas, and as part of a rich curriculum integrated with other subject areas.”
Our Vision
All children will have access to quality, sequential instruction in music, dance, theatre, and visual arts. To meet this goal, schools will embrace a “shared delivery” approach to arts instruction, built from partnerships between classroom teachers, arts specialist teachers, and teaching artists, supported by a system of collaborative planning and coordinated teaching.
In addition to in-school arts education programs serving all schools in Los Angeles County, we offer a number of programs for children and families to visit the Music Center. Most family performances take place on weekends and are free of charge.
